Phil McGrane's Secret April 1st Endorsement: 'No Fooling'

Posted By on Sun, Mar 30, 2014 at 1:00 PM

When Idaho Secretary of State Ben Ysursa announced last November that 2014 would be his last year in office, his decision opened a floodgate of interest from politicians—mostly from Ysursa's own party.

Ysursa has held a 12-year grip on the Secretary of State's Office, winning elections and re-elections by landslides.

In the past few months, no fewer than five candidates have announced their intentions to succeed Ysursa—Four Republicans: Midvale Rep. Lawerence Denney, former Sen. Evan Frasure, Ada County Chief Deputy Clerk Phil McGrane, former Sen. Mitch Toryanski; and one Democrat: Rep. Holli High Woodings.

But Ysursa has remained mum regarding his preference for a successor.

That is, until this coming week.

Republican Party sources are hinting that Ysursa will publicly endorse McGrane's candidacy this coming Tuesday. Indeed, McGrane says he'll have an April 1st surprise: "No fooling," according to his release promoting what he called a "a major campaign announcement," at the Idaho State Capitol.

To date, McGrane's highest profile endorsements had come from Republican county elected officials from across Idaho.

Meanwhile, Denney picked up an unusual endorsement of his own Saturday evening at Nampa's Ford Idaho Center, from Phil Robertson, star of the Duck Dynasty reality show on A&E-TV. Denney introduced some of the Duck Dynasty clan from the stage of the Idaho Center, saying his daughter worked for the Robertson's family business.
