Feud Between Two Idaho Teachers Fuels Social Media 'Firestorm'

Hundreds of parents, students and educators packed into an Eastern Idaho high-school auditorium April 4 to witness a due process hearing where the fate of a veteran teacher hangs in the balance.

This morning's Idaho State Journal reports that Elaine Asmus, a 29-year veteran science teacher at Snake River High School got into a bit of hot water when she had a heated exchange with first-year science teacher Laura Gabrylczyk. It turns out that Gabrylczyk is the wife of the district's superintendent, Mark Gabrylczk.

A string of witnesses were called before a special hearing where they testified on behalf of either woman. Meanwhile, school board trustees are still undecided on whether they'll renew Asmus's teacher contract. A decision by the board must be made within 15 days of Friday's hearing.

Meanwhile, the State Journal reports that the melodrama has erupted into "a firestorm on Facebook."

"Of course it has turned into a social media nightmare," testified Gabrylczyk.
