The Idaho Republican party came together this morning in a show of unity after a controversial primary election.

Assembling at the Capitol steps, GOP leaders, legislators and boosters told the press that despite differences between primary election candidates, the Idaho Republican Party has the leaders and ideas that can bring political unity and economic security to the state.

"Primary elections are just hard," said Russ Fulcher, who challenged Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter in a contentious gubernatorial race that garnered national media attention. "Afterwards we're challenged to come together. We agree on this: Idahoans have the character to lead us to prosperity."

Fulcher lost to Otter by nearly 11,000 votes

Otter commended the primary election itself, which, while it included a number of high-profile GOP leaders going down to defeat, he said ultimately made the party stronger.

"It was a refining and disciplining process," he said.

Otter will now face off in the Nov. 4 general election against Democratic challenger A.J. Balukoff, who handily won the Democratic primary election.
