Eastern Idaho Officials Want to Curb 'Predatory Booting'

It's called "predatory booting" and even city officials in Rexburg say it has gotten out of hand.

KIDK-TV reports that Rexburg officials are being flooded with complaints regarding over-anxious towing companies. The current Rexburg city ordinance allows the companies to monitor parking lots with the owner's permission, but citizens say they've been watching as the tow companies immediately slap a boot on cars that may be parking where they aren't supposed to.

It's not as if the illegal parkers are saying they shouldn't have been fined, but the complaints argue that the tow companies are booting the cars and charging $50 a bit too quickly.

So now, Rexburg officials say they want to change their current ordinance with one that makes it illegal to tow or boot a car unless it is in the presence of a police officer or has direct permission from a property owner.

"It would take away that profit motive for the boot," Rexburg City Clerk Blair Kay told KIDK-TV. "Take it from the booter's company to the owner of the property, which they would not have a profit motive."

The issue is expected to be considered in June.
