Fatal Accident at Idaho Sunshine Mine

An accident at the North Idaho Sunshine Mine has claimed a life.

KREM-TV reports that a man identified as Nick Rounds was killed when he jumped on a mining skip that was not tied off. KREM-TV reports that sources say Rounds was crushed between the mine shaft and the skip. The incident occurred June 2.

The Sunshine Mine, located between the Idaho Panhandle cities of Kellogg and Wallace, is owned and operated by the Sunshine Silver Mine company.

The company had been working on refurbishing the mine since it purchased the property in 2010. Following a February 2012 fire and evacuation, the company reduced its workforce because of high gas levels and fire.

The mine was the scene of one of Idaho's worst tragedies, when 91 men were killed in the so-called Sunshine Mine Fire of 1972.

KREM-TV reports that Rounds grew up in and around the mining industry, with his father working at the Sunshine Mine as well.
