Starbucks Will Soon Be Offering Wireless Charging

Posted By on Thu, Jun 12, 2014 at 9:24 AM

Walk into any Starbucks on the planet and you'll see a group of heavily caffeinated people hunched over their laptops, tablets and smartphones. And many of them have positioned themselves at or near one of the coffee shops electrical outlets to recharge their devices.

But this morning, the world's largest coffee chain announced that it will be rolling out wireless phone chargers in its cafes across the U.S.

Its a unique partnership with Duracell Powermat, in which customers will be able to place their compatible devices on so-called "powermat spots" on counters and tables. Starbucks began offering free WiFi Internet service just four years ago.

To use the system, you either have to have a wireless charging-capable cellphone (there are very few of them currently) or a phone accessory with the capability and those accessories are available for most popular phones.

Over the next three years, more than 100,000 table chargers will be installed in Starbucks' 7,500 U.S. stores—about a dozen per store.
