It's every parent's nightmare: The phone rings and someone says, "There's an active shooter at the school." But the scenario is being realized with increasing regularity, the latest such incident at a high school in Troutdale, Ore.

And in a bizarre sign of the times, parents are now purchasing bulletproof backpacks for their children. Even bulletproof whiteboards, iPad cases and blankets are being marketed by Mighty Mojo, ProTech, Bullet Blocker and BodyGuard, to name a few. Bullet Blocker even markets a so-called school bag survival kit for $400, complete with a bulletproof backpack and a first aid kit. "This package is a great self-contained kit to augment the reaction plans for school lock downs as well as personal safety plans," advertises the company.

But the president of National School Safety and Security Services says the products aren't particularly useful.

"I look at some of these bulletproof backpacks and wipe boards ... how would this really work in the real world?" asked Kenneth Trump of NSSSS. "If you have a bulletproof backpack, would you need a bulletproof front-pack, and bulletproof helmet, and a Captain America shield to go with it?"

Millions of parents may have watched in horror this morning, as NBC's Today Show reported on the phenomenon (see above).
