Press: Tragedy Haunted Woman Killed Outside N. Idaho Hospital

A heartbreaking history of violence is emerging as officials begin to piece together details surrounding the shooting death of a woman outside of a North Idaho hospital July 8.

Earlier this week, we told you how law enforcement shot and killed the knife-wielding woman outside of Bonner General Hospital in Sandpoint.

The woman has now been identified as Jeanetta Riley, formerly known as Jeanetta Maddox.

This morning's Coeur d'Alene Press reports that the woman was a married mother who resided southwest of Priest River.

And according to court records, Riley was described as a victim of chronic domestic violence and child abuse and as having a history of substance abuse. In 2008, Riley was charged with felony domestic violence in the presence of children following the stabbing of her then-husband. But court records also show that Riley's former husband had battered her in 2004 and 2006. She was pregnant at the time she was a battery victim in 2006.

Riley and her current husband were arrested this past March on charges of mutual spousal battery, but the charges were dismissed because they refused to testify against one another.

Police said Riley was shot in the chest Tuesday evening, while wielding a knife and refusing Sandpoint Police officers' commands to drop the weapon. Police said Riley "aggressed" the officers, resulting in the gunfire.
