Judge Denies CNN Request to Unseal Bergdahl Police File

An Idaho judge has shot down a request from CNN to unseal old police records involving the family of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

Following Bergdahl's controversial release on May 31, when he was swapped by this Taliban captors for five detainees from Guantanamo, CNN asked for any and all police reports involving the address of the Bergdahl family. Law enforcement did supply CNN with three other reports but refused to hand over the file from a 1999 investigation.

CNN insisted that the 1999 file should be released under the Idaho Public Records Law, but Blaine County Prosecutor Tim Graves said the document was protected because releasing it would constitute "an unwanted invasion of personal privacy."

And on Tuesday, July 29, Fifth District Judge Robert Elgee agreed with the prosecutor, denying CNN's request.

"We won't be commenting further on the judge's ruling at this time," a CNN spokeswoman told the Idaho Mountain Express.
