A man, believed to have been surfing the New York Canal with a makeshift surfboard, died Monday evening.

A passerby noticed that the man went under the water's surface in South Ada County. It's believed that the man was submerged for about 10 to 15 minutes. Witnesses said the victim, who had tied a rope from his ankle to the "surfboard" made of plywood, had become tangled, dragging him under the water. The passerby was able to pull the victim to shore.

Firefighters, paramedics and ACSO deputies arrived on the scene and attempted to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at an area hospital. His name has yet to be released.

The depth of the water in the canal behind Foxbrush off of Five Mile Road is between 20 and 25 feet. The canal is private property and swimming or playing in the water is not permitted.
