Memo to New Horizons School Kids: Guess What? You're Hoofing It Again

With another school year just days away, parents of children attending Nampa's New Horizons Elementary School are facing the same dilemma as they struggled with last year: no busing.

As the Nampa School District attempted to keep its nose above a river of red ink in its 2012-2013 budget mess, school officials cut off bus service to New Horizons, saving the district approximately $260,000. But parents were assured that the district and a special committee would work through the summer months to come up with possible solutions as the district attempted to crawl out of its fiscal hole.

But this morning's Idaho Press-Tribune reports that a meeting of the Nampa School Board dissolved Tuesday night, with emotions running high and solutions running low. School Superintendent David Peterson told school board members that the special committee "presented no plans or cost estimates" to fix the New Horizons issue, according to the Press-Tribune, but a parent who served on the committee said that simply wasn't true, instead telling the board that Peterson was misrepresenting the committee's work.

Ultimately, board members directed Peterson to return in October with "transportation options," including costs and possible partnerships with neighboring school districts to solve the busing issue.
