Tribune: Absent Idaho Jurors Now Facing Contempt of Court

An Idaho judge said he was "starting to feel ignored" Aug. 11 as a growing number of North-Central Idaho citizens aren't showing up for jury duty.

In the latest round of jury summonses, eight Idaho residents didn't show up for jury duty this week and 2nd District Court Judge Jeff Brudie said "that's not a good situation."

The Lewiston Tribune reports that a number of potential jurors were summoned for possible jury duty in the trial of a man charged with rape. But that trial had to be postponed when as many as eight prospective jurors didn't show.

That prompted Brudie to give the absentees the opportunity to explain why they didn't show. But eight of those original absentees didn't even show for the second summons. The Tribune reports that the few that did show to explain their absences told Brudie that "the court notification system is confusing."

What's next? Bridue indicated that he will start contempt of court proceedings against the eight who didn't show up on Aug. 11 to explain their absences.
