An Eastern Idaho prison is on lockdown after an inmate was shot dead from a yard tower following an assault.

According to the La Grande Observer, officials at the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution said a correctional officer shot the inmate to prevent another inmate from being assaulted. The wounded inmate, identified as Jayson Withers—who was serving time for negligent homicide, robbery and identity theft—was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to the Oregon Department of Corrections, two inmates, including Withers, were assaulting a third inmate. The names of the other two inmates were not released.

ODOC confirmed that the prison, located in Pendleton, was on lockdown and all visits were canceled until further notice.
