UPS Will Hire Thousands More to Curb Holiday Delays

Santa will have a lot more helpers this holiday season: United Parcel Service announced this morning that it would nearly double its Christmas staffing in the coming months. In fact, UPS officials said they would hire between 90,000 and 95,000 seasonal employees this year in anticipation of a surge in deliveries.

E-commerce purchases are expected to trigger the spike in hiring. Last Christmas, nearly 60 percent of all U.S. deliveries by UPS were e-commerce packages, compared with about 40 percent for the rest of the year.

UPS was roundly criticized during last year's holiday season when large volumes delayed some deliveries.

This year, in addition to the extra staffing, UPS says it will install temporary mobile sorting and delivery centers and add thousands of delivery vehicles and aircraft to its network.
