Idaho's Jobless Rate Ticked Down Again in August

Idaho's jobless rate is keeping pace with a national downward trend, the Idaho Department of Labor reports.

The Gem State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a point, reaching 4.7 percent. That matches a one-tenth-of-a-point drop experienced across the country, though Idaho's unemployment rate has been below the national average for the last 13 years.

In the last 12 months, the jobless rate in Idaho has dropped 1.5 percent, from 6.2 percent in 2013.

The cause of the drop came from a variety of factors. More than 600 workers left the labor force, and the total labor force dropped marginally for the second month in a row. Businesses hired 18,600 workers in August, mostly to fill job vacancies, and new hires were below August 2013 levels.

Participation in Idaho's labor force dropped another one-tenth of a percent in August. In August 2013, labor force participation was 64 percent; this august, it dropped to 63.5 percent.
