Deliberate Fire in Chicago Cancels Flights in Boise, Cities Across the U.S.

A check of the arrival and departure screens at the Boise Airport Saturday morning indicated that United Airlines Flight 357 from Boise to Chicago was canceled.

That was only one of thousands of flights canceled in and out of Chicago Saturday, following a nightmarish day when a fire, allegedly set by a contract employee, shut down Chicago's air traffic control center, thus tangling transportation across the U.S. The employee was charged Friday with destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities. When paramedics found him, he was trying to cut his own throat. He survived, but remains hospitalized.

The fire halted all traffic in and out of O'Hare and Midway airports. The aftermath continued to delay or cancel flights throughout the day and night and into Saturday. Jet were taking off and landing at a much-reduced pace by Saturday morning.

Boise travelers will be happy to know that United Flight 3707 from Boise to Chicago on Saturday, scheduled for 2.32 p.m., was expected to be on schedule.
