LGBT Advocates Point to Momentum: Now It's Time to Add the Words

Shortly after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals kicked in the final door of Idaho's ban on same-sex marriage, Idaho's Add the Words advocates said it was time for the Idaho Legislature to get with the program.

"We ask the Idaho Legislature to take the lead and grant a hearing for the Add the Words bill in 2015," said Add the Words organizer Cindy Gross on Tuesday.

The Idaho Statehouse was the scene of multiple arrests during the 2014 session as scores of citizens were led off to jail after expressing their frustration over lawmakers' lack of effort to even hold a hearing on the matter.

"Our judicial system has confirmed that denying same-gender couples the right to marry violates the Constitution of the United States of America," said Gross. "As Idaho begins to issue marriage licenses to same-gender couples on Oct. 8, it becomes even more essential that we add the words 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identity' to the Idaho Human Rights Act."

Early Wednesday morning, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy issued a stay, temporarily blocking enforcement of the 9th Circuit Court order at the request of Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter and Attorney General Lawrence Wasden. Kennedy gave them until 5 p.m. Thursday to file a response, thus delaying same-sex marriages in Idaho until at least Friday.
