Idaho Maze Goes Up in Flames

A Blaine County maze, built from tall straw bales, was the scene of a few more scares than planned. This morning's Idaho Mountain Express reports that the maze at the Bellevue Triangle went up in flames Oct. 18.

Seven fire engines from the the Wood River Fire and Rescue, Bellevue, Hailey and Carey fire departments rushed to the scene on Pero Road, on property owned by John Stevenson. That's where they found the maze—1-ton bales on a 100- by 150-foot area—ablaze. The fire burned for the better part of 24 hours, according to officials. The cause is still under investigation by the Blaine County Sheriff''s Office.

"We're told that it was lighted by a juvenile with a lighter," Wood River Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Nevins told the Mountain Express. "Fortunately the neighbors brought in loaders and started tearing the maze apart, hauling pieces of it to a nearby plowed field. The property owners also fired up a sprinkler system to protect surrounding property."
