Ski Goggle Manufacturer Leaving Idaho

A significant Wood River Valley employer is pulling up stakes and moving its operations to Oregon.

The Associated Press is reporting that Smith Optics—which invented the double-lens, vented ski goggle—is taking 85 jobs away from Ketchum and moving its design headquarters to Portland, Ore.

Smith Optics was founded in the 1960s by Robert Earl "Bob" Smith, who patented his unique ski goggle that is now the industry standard. He passed away in 2012.

The AP reports that Smith Optics is now owned by an Italian company—Safilo Group—which announced Oct. 20 that it wants to see Smith Optics go global by 2020.
