Posted By on Mon, Oct 27, 2014 at 9:37 AM

The Rexburg Police Department said Sunday night that it had identified an individual who made a sick joke on social media that there would be a shooting incident today at BYU-Idaho.

Rexburg Police posted the following on its Facebook page Sunday evening:

Today 10/26/2014, an individual posted on a social sight that he was going to "shoot up BYU-I". The Rexburg Police Department has located this individual and interviewed him. This was not an actual threat, but a bad joke.

Thanks for all of the concern and people reporting the post.
A short time later, officials at BYU-Idaho issued their own statement:

"BYU-Idaho takes threats like these very seriously," the statement said. "An extensive plan is in place for all types of emergencies, including shootings. The university was ready to activate that plan in this situation if it had been necessary."
The identity of the person making the original threat was not released to the public.
