Idaho Rock Slide Suspends Amtrak, Freight Trains

Posted By on Sat, Nov 29, 2014 at 10:19 AM

Thanksgiving travel is defined by planes, trains and automobiles. But one-third of that equation came to a halt Friday when a rock slide, just east of Bonners Ferry, brought all passenger and freight trains passing through North Idaho to a standstill.

A spokesman for BNSF confirmed to the Associated Press that a large slide had covered the tracks Friday afternoon and nearly two dozen railway personnel had been dispatched, along with heavy equipment, to help clear the debris. The AP reports that Amtrak passenger trains running from Seattle and Portland and through Idaho's Panhandle had been halted for 48 hours and freight traffic was also temporarily suspended.
