A south-central Idaho man faces jail time and a year in prison for illegally possessing a handgun, according to the office of U.S. District Attorney Wendy Olson.

Oscar Ayala-Arizmendi, a Mexican national living in the United States illegally, has been tied to a sex slave case in which a woman told authorities that Ayala-Arizmendi held her against her will and kept her as a sex slave, but felony charges for rape and first-degree kidnapping were dropped by District Judge B. Lynn Winmill.

During a search of the suspect's home, however, law enforcement found a 9-millimeter handgun. It is illegal for people living in the United States illegally to possess firearms. In addition to jail time, Ayala-Arizmendi will be deported at the end of his sentence.
