Idaho Fish and Game Prosecutes Hunter For Illegally Killing Grizzly

Posted By on Tue, Dec 16, 2014 at 9:34 AM

In a case that Idaho officials say is the first time the state has successfully prosecuted grizzly poaching since the animals were first protected by the Endangered Species Act, an Idaho man has been sentenced to two years probation.

The Associated Press reports that 23-year-old Kenneth Sommer of the Fremont County community of Newdale was hunting for black bears in Eastern Idaho when he illegally killed the grizzly.

Sommer insisted that he had only shot the grizzly when the animal began charging Sommer and his wife. But the AP reports that conservation officers said there was no evidence that the bear had ever charged Sommer.
