North-Central Idaho Parents Warned of Whooping Cough Cases

Parents in North-Central Idaho's Latah County received emails Wednesday evening, warning them of confirmed cases of pertussis, aka whooping cough.

This morning's Lewiston Tribune reports that parents were urged to check with health care providers "to make sure your child's shots are up to date."

"We know vaccinations aren't 100 percent effective 100 percent of the time, but it does greatly reduce the chance of contracting it," Anna Olson, North Idaho Central District epidemiologist, told the Tribune. "And if a person has been immunized and they do contract it, the case is often more mild."

Three Latah County children have been diagnosed thus far with whooping cough, which is spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or even talks.
