Boise Council Greenlights Northwest Neighborhood Apartment Complex

In spite of some pushback from neighbors saying a new development would significantly increase traffic to the State Street-Gary Lane area, the Boise City Council has given the green light to a complex that will see more than 300 apartments. The latest incarnation of the northwest Boise development, from the Hawkins Companies and Bach Homes, was the third attempt for developers to get a blessing from the council, and on Tuesday night, Boise lawmakers gave their OK.

But the 13-acre development also includes integration of commercial space into the neighborhood, triggering concerns from neighbors who worried that the traffic, coupled with an abundance of students and staff from area schools, could be a safety issue.

"We're not trying to stop it completely, but we're trying to find a happy medium for everyone," said spokeswoman Lydia Hamilton in September 2014. "This parcel is one of the last remaining opportunities for innovative mixed use in our city."

After the council sent developers back to the drawing board on two occasions, they said Tuesday night that the new commercial/residential mix was indeed the direction the city was hoping to move toward.
