A North Idaho man says he was protecting his three dogs when he killed a wolf on his property Dec. 30, 2014, but the Idaho Department of Fish and Game has cited the Rathdrum man for unlawful possession of an untagged animal.

KXLY-TV reports that Forest Mize says he was on his daily walk on Rathdrum Mountain when he spotted an animal "crouching in the woods." He told KXLY-TV that he usually carries a rifle on his walk because of mountain lions in the area. But this time, it was 100-pound wolf in his crosshairs.

"I couldn't come home if I didn't come home with my three dogs,” Mize told KXLY-TV. “The wife would kill me."

Mize said that he hoped to hang the wolf in his house, but he didn't have a tag, allowing a taxidermist to handle the animal. When Mize did apply for a tag, he said the purchase must "have raised a red fag to Fish and Game officers," according to KXLY-TV. And indeed he received a citation for the kill, which carries a maximum penalty of $1,000, up to six months in jail and/or having a hunting/fishing license revoked for up to three years.
