A Boise man is dead after a standoff with the Boise Police Department that took place in the early morning of Feb. 16 on the Bench. Police were called to a duplex on the corner of Malad and Gourley streets around 1:30 a.m., where a man was using a crowbar to break out the front windows of the duplex.

According to the police department news release, the first officer on the scene tried to make contact with the man as additional officers arrived. The officers continued to hear crashing sounds coming from inside the duplex. Officers tried to speak to the man, then heard shots fired from inside. The man then pointed his weapon at one of the officers, and another officer fired toward the suspect—though it was initially unclear if the shot hit the man.

After the guns fired, the neighboring houses were immediately evacuated and the Boise Police SWAT team arrived for the safety of the neighborhood. Officers found the suspect dead in the front room of the duplex at 4:27 a.m.

The incident is now under investigation by the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force. Officer Jason Green, who fired the shot, is now on leave to "allow him to de-stress and recover after being involved." As of 8:50 a.m., investigators found evidence that shots fired from the duplex into the surrounding neighborhood hit a parked vehicle and a home across the street.

The investigation also shows that it appears the officer's shot did strike the suspect, who was a man reportedly in his mid-20s. The Ada County Coroner will soon release the suspect's identity and cause of death.
