Officers Respond to Report of Rifle-Carrying Man on BSU Campus

Members of the Boise State University community received a Bronco Alert Monday when Boise Police and BSU Security officers responded to a citizen report of a man carrying a firearm on campus.

The report indicated that a man carried a rifle into the Construction Management Lab on Belmont Street. Officers found the man and determined that there was no public threat or crime. The man returned the rifle to his vehicle, and officers have referred the man to the university for review of a potential university policy violation.

The issue of firearms on public college and university campuses raised headlines during the 2014 legislative session, when lawmakers passed the so-called Guns on Campus bill, which was signed into law by Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter.

The law's supporters said that Second Amendment rights don't end at the academy door, but its detractors—including students, staff, administrators and law enforcement—said that the law would make students and staff feel unsafe, and make enforcing campus security more complicated and expensive.
