Two big questions emerged after $60,000 worth of gold was stolen from a pickup in Coeur d'Alene on March 21: "Who took the gold?" and "What was that gold doing in the truck outside of an Elmer's Restaurant in the first place?"

Today's Coeur d'Alene Press reports that Ralph Smith of Ronan, Mont., had been displaying his wares at the Northwest Gold Prospectors Association annual treasure show at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. And he had packed up his gold and grabbed a bite to eat at Elmer's before heading home.

But when he returned to his pickup, the gold was gone.

"There was some bullion and coins in there, but it was mostly placer [natural form] gold," Smith told the Press.

Meanwhile the Northwest Gold Prospector Association is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the gold.
