Pronetos Goes Live

BSU's new online community years in the making

Wiki, whatever. Myspace, flyspace. An assortment of academics and geeks at Boise State have just launched their own Internet space, with ambitious goals.

They call it Pronetos, or, "The professor's network."

So what's the deal?

Everything, it turns out.

From the Boise State press release:

The site allows registered scholars from around the globe to collaborate on research, review one another’s work and ultimately get published with less hassle. Pronetos gives academics a robust set of tools such as blogs, forums, wikis and more, and is organized by academic discipline.

The site is the brainchild of Chris Blanchard, a graduate student in History (and former City Hall staffer) who got frustrated trying to navigate the peer-review process at the University.

The site developers talk more about this in the site's blog:

That is what Pronetos was born for - returning control of ideas to the people that create the ideas.

Of course, Pronetos is likely to be much more.

More from the site's builders:

"Publish your life's work. Share an idea with colleagues, and get real-time feedback. Post messages. Start a blog. Upload podcasts of your lectures. Post your curriculum materials. Use Pronetos as a repository for papers in your field - they'll be indexed, searchable, publicly available and secure."

More from Blanchard, on the blog: "the Web is the ultimate place to publish if you are looking to both protect and circulate ideas."

The site "went public" today, after four years of quiet development.

The Pronetos project was launched with advising assistance from the Boise State TECenter and a marketing plan drafted by Boise State's fall 2006 GB450 class. In addition, Pronetos' software was created by MenloPrk, a company led by a Boise State alumnus.
