Larry Craig Arrested

Posted By on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 4:00 AM

We're only just getting this newsbreak now: U.S. Sen. Larry Craig was arrested in June on lewd conduct charges in a Minneapolis airport.

Details as we get them. Roll Call has the report, but their Web site is clogged to traffic, and no wonder.

We've got an excerpt of Roll Call's report:

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men's public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.

Craig's arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.

A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a "he said/he said misunderstanding," and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.

After he was arrested, Craig, who is married, was taken to the Airport Police Operations Center to be interviewed about the lewd conduct incident, according to the police report. At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, "What do you think about that?" the report states.

Craig was detained for approximately 45 minutes, interviewed, photographed, fingerprinted and released, and police prepared a formal complaint for interference with privacy and disorderly conduct.

Of course, this story comes at a time when Craig is reportedly rethinking his interest in running for re-election to the U.S. Senate. Already his hesitancy has produced one potential contender: Lt. Gov. Jim Risch, who has told BW that he is waiting for Craig to make a promised mid-September announcement before making any moves of his own.

The story also comes just months after Craig fought back accusations made by gay activist Mike Rogers that Craig is gay.

Those allegations, made in October, were covered online by BW.

Mike Rogers, who contributes to, said after two years of research that he was "100 percent solid" with his information, and that he had spoken with men who had been sex partners with Craig.

The accusations, which were based on anonymous sources, were met with scorn and immediate denial by Craig spokesman Sid Smith in Boise.

"Mr. Rogers' claims are completely ridiculous and not based in fact," Smith said. "They're just ridiculous."

Rogers made his claims on "The Ed Schultz Show," a liberal talk show that is not broadcast in the Treasure Valley but that can be heard online.
