Andrus: I'll Show You Second-Class

Posted on Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 4:00 AM

Are Idaho's Democratic voters, and the delegates they send to the party's national convention, "second-class" delegates?

Heck yeah, said a representative of Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Heck no, said this guy who used to be Idaho's governor: Cecil Andrus, who has endorsed Barack Obama's campaign, shipped out word today that Clinton and Joel Ferguson, the offending Michiganer who dissed on Idaho's delegates, ought to apologize.

"Senator Clinton’s surrogates are telling Democrats in almost half the states in the country that they don’t matter, and that they are second class," Andrus said in a prepared statement. "Senator Clinton needs to immediately denounce these comments and tell her campaign surrogates to stop taking cheap pot-shots at committed Democrats across the country.”

The Andrus statements, sure to be breathlessly reported hereabouts, are the latest efforts by the Obama campaign to state how they are shocked, shocked, that Clinton's team might be doing some politicking in the mainstream press about Obama's little-state wins versus her campaign's big-delegate wins. Similar statements are being made by governors in other states.

An Obama campaign favorite is this memo from Clinton strategist Mark Penn, poo-pooing the Obama victories in Democratic primaries and caucuses in states like Idaho.
