Planned Parenthood; Call Misrepresented

Posted By on Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 4:00 AM

According to Planned Parenthood of Idaho, a recorded conversation released by a California-based anti-abortion group is not only misleading, but a race-based deceptive tactic.

"It's an extremist, anti-choice group that has manipulated a 25-minute conversation," said Rebecca Poedy, executive director Planned Parenthood of Idaho. "It's not an accurate representation of the transcript."

The conversation in question was recorded in July 2007 by The Advocate, an ultra conservative magazine published by student at the University of California-Los Angles. The group hired actors to call Planned Parenthood offices in various states and offer donations to help fund abortions for racial minorities. The calls quickly go from offer to help those in need, to racist diatribes.

The Advocate released the tapes of calls to both Idaho and Ohio, as well as a video made with the two calls, and promises to release more in the future. The group calls the tapes examples of Planned Parenthood targeting minority groups.

Poedy said the Idaho office never accepted money from the staged call, and reported the incident to the national office immediately.

"It's an all-new situation," she said. "It's not at all what we expected."

Poedy said the released portions of the call do not fairly represent what happened, and the group has a history of baiting pro-choice organizations with these type of calls.

"They're all designed with an intent to bait someone into a conversation they can then manipulate," she said. Poedy admits her staff mishandled the call, but said no one was ready for a group with this kind of tactic.

"We need to train our staff to handle calls from people that are coming with offensive agendas," she said. Check out the March 5 edition of BW for more information.
