Gas, Food Costs Begin to Pinch

The rising costs of both gas and food are hitting home.

The Boise Rescue Mission served more than 25,500 meals in March—the most ever in a non-holiday month—and the record number is attributed to increasing costs for everyday items.

Mission director Bill Roscoe said 25 percent of those taking advantage of the free meals are not homeless, but just having a hard time financially. Many of those showing up at the mission are single mothers with kids, seniors and those working minimum-wage jobs.

A full 30 percent of the people having meals at the mission are women and children, but the same group makes up only 23 percent of those who stay overnight, according to Roscoe.

He noted that more than 800 meals were served on a single day last month.
