Kanye West and Taylor Swift at the VMAs or the Very Megalomaniacal Awards

And I was just warming up to him. Turned off by his self-perpetuated hype, I didn't even consider Kanye West for a long time. But I heard "Gold Digger" ft. Jamie Foxx and liked it (the link is the edited version and mostly safe for work). I watched the floating-Rihanna-in-an-eerie-dream video for "Paranoid" and liked it. I listened to the rest of 808's and Heartbreak and liked it. I was coming around. And then he went and traumatized tiny Taylor (Swift).

At MTV's Video Music Awards show on Sunday night, 19-year-old country caterwauler Taylor Swift—wide-eyed, surprised and looking all grown up in a full-length, one-shouldered, sort-of-see-through, sparkly silver dress—accepted the award for Best Female Video.

As she was giving her speech—"Thank you so much ... I always dreamed of getting one of these ... I sing country music ... blah, blah, blah ...," K Dub (sunglasses surgically attached to his face as usual) rushed the stage behind her, took her microphone, albeit gently, and hollered, "Yo, Taylor. Ima let you finish, but Beyonce [pointing to her] had one of the best videos of all time."

The camera panned to Beyonce, who was genuinely shocked. "One of the best videos of all time," he reiterated. In a gesture that seemed to indicate even he knew he'd gone too far, he shrugged, handed Swift the mic and left the stage only to be escorted out of the building.

Swift never regained her composure and stood looking around as if caught in the middle of a Milli Vanilli or Ashlee Simpson moment.

When the jellylicious, and very gracious, Beyonce went up to accept her own award for Best Video of the Year, she invited Swift onstage to finish her interrupted acceptance speech.

On his blog, West apologized, writing he was sorry, his sincerity punctuated with lots of punctuation (verbatim)—"I'm not crazy y'all, i'm just real. Sorry for that!!! I really feel bad for Taylor and I'm sincerely sorry!!! Much respect!!!!!"

We all behave weirdly or badly at one time or another and hope that people will forgive us our trespasseses. I'll give West a mulligan on this one.
