Bogus Watch '09

Posted By on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 12:07 PM

OK, we’re starting an official Bogus watch.

Snow is starting to pile up on the hill, inching the resort closer to opening for the season. Within the last 24 hours, 5 inches have brought the base up to 15 inches, and it’s still coming down.

Gretchen Anderson, Bogus spokesperson, said it’s snowing so hard that plow drivers on Bogus Basin Road are having a hard time keeping up with it.

In past years, Bogus has opened with as little as 17 inches at the base, but Anderson said no one is making an official announcement yet.

“We’d like to see a couple of feet, but we’d like to get open as soon as possible,” she said.

The Christmas holiday is the make-or-break time for ski areas to make their revenue for the year.
“It’s crunch time,” Anderson said. “That’s when we need to be open. That’s when we make lots of money.”

The good news is that besides a solid dumping of snow, and more mountain storms in the forecast, the snow piling up is the perfect type to build a good ski hill base.

The hill is largely prepped to go, but with only a partial staff on duty, everyone is scrambling to keep up. Once an opening date has been announced, crews will put the finishing safety measures in place and finish grooming slopes. The rest of the mountain staff also have to be notified, so any opening takes at least 48 hours, Anderson said.

Keep checking back for more updates.
