Heroes of the Long Lines at SXSW

Posted By on Mon, Mar 15, 2010 at 10:24 PM

I learned the hard way Sunday night that waiting in poorly-managed lines for SXSW movies can be a real waste of time. After getting turned away from a new documentary about SNL, I arrived almost an hour early for the second-ever showing of the new documentary American: The Bill Hicks Story.

I got to the line at the same time as my movie-going partner Matt Shook, original founder of Daily Juice. So we got to talking about line ethics, which are a big deal every year at SXSW. Within a few minutes, we overheard a guy ahead of us say, "No we'll just go get in line with you," when his friends showed up late and tried to step in with him. Shook insisted it was the first time he'd ever seen anything like it after years of waiting in these lines! So I gave up my spot to go and ask them about it.

I met the two folks who showed up late and they introduced me to the day's heroes, Kirk Johnson and Will Elliott. Guess what? They're a comedy duo. And most locals have enough experience at Paramount to know there's usually no need to let your friends cut. By the time we got in, Shook had picked up a popcorn from concession, and sneaked into my shot while they posed in the unforgettable Paramount Theater lobby.

Will post a full review of the Bill Hicks documentary tomorrow. Meanwhile, check out the crazy antics of today's line heroes, Beef & Sage, who insist they have their first feature film coming out this summer.
