While waiting in line for your triple Americano at Flying M last spring, you likely stopped to stare at an assortment of tiny paper chairs made from used to-go coffee cups. What might inspire someone to weave an old, stained coffee cup into a piece of furniture fit for Gallery Curator Barbie’s modernist dream house? A $200 Visa gift card, for starters.

Started in 2007, the Re:Use Cup Challenge is inspired by Boise’s Re:Use Market and associated with the annual Chair Affair design blowout, which challenges local students and designers to create innovative new ways to rest their rumps. Furniture design enthusiasts without the tools, money or skills to enter the Chair Affair can enter the Re:Use Cup challenge for the price of a single cup of joe. Each crafty entrant can submit only one design and must follow these requirements:

“Visit your favorite local coffee shop. Order a 12-ounce hot beverage to-go and enjoy. Re:Use the expired drink cup, lid, stir-stick and insulated sleeve to create a miniature chair. Cut, tear, rip, glue and then marvel at your brilliant design.”

All cup designs must be dropped of at Business Interiors of Idaho at 176 S. Capitol Blvd. by Friday, April 16. Winners of the Re:Use Cup Challenge will be announced at the Chair Affair gala on Saturday, April 24, at the Visual Arts Collective. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in both youth (under 12) and adult categories.
