Will Race For Twinkies (Or Beer)

Posted By on Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 6:00 AM

When I was in kindergarten, the term "trading" referenced my feeble attempts to procure the contraband lunchbox items that never even made it into my family's shopping cart at the grocery store, let alone into my mouth.

Me (tentative smile mixed with hope and lust): "I'll trade you my organic carrot sticks for your Twinkie."
Other kid: "Ha ha ha ha ha!" (wiping away tears of laughter).

These days, I think of "trading" in conjunction with my daily read of the Wall Street Journal, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and a discount store in Meridian called Sierra Trading Post.

But not today. Today, I've brokered my best trade of 2010.

It all began because my neighbor across the street had something I wanted: a number for this Saturday's annual Race to Robie Creek. And, as is customary in trading, I had something he wanted: two different cold beers on tap, a mere 50 paces from his front door. Oh sure, there was a bit more negotiating involved and currency might have changed hands, but let's cut to the chase: I now will have the company of over 2,000 people when I do my routine weekender long run.

Anyone else out there want to join us? There's still a chance. Packet pickup and number exchanges ("trading," if you will) take place on Wednesday evening from 5-8 p.m. at Boise's Basque Center at 601 Grove St. Almost anyone can be bought if the price is right—especially if you can include unlimited trips to a kegerator.
