Remember the whole glass-ceiling thing your mom used to talk about? Well, sadly, it didn’t go the way of the ’80s power suit. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, ladies still make 77 cents for every $1 earned by dudes, and that unfortunate disparity starts to settle in just one year after college. If we’re talking starting salaries, this means that a woman earning $30,000 a year will make $8,961 less than the man in the cubicle next to her. That’s roughly 2,987 more lattes or 30 more round trip plane tickets, if you're counting.

To raise attention about this issue, the Boise Area Branch of the American Association of University Women, the Idaho Women’s Network and the Boise State Gender Studies program have all teamed up to co-sponsor Equal Pay Day, today, Tuesday, April 20.

Earlier this afternoon, Boise State hosted a brownbag panel discussion on "Negotiating Salary and Benefits." If you missed that, join your fellow cash-strapped chicks from 5-6 p.m. tonight at the TableRock Brewpub for some free appetizers and no-host beverages at happy hour prices to discuss Equal Pay Day. But if free food and cheap drinks still aren’t enough to make you forget about wage discrimination, maybe you aught to figure out another way to, cough, celebrate 4/20.
