Getting Lost With Ben Burdick

I got lost at the Owyhee Plaza last weekend. It all started at the Gamekeeper Lounge, where I met a dozen friends for Friday evening cocktails. I noticed a drum kit set up on a small parquet dance floor at the back of the dim hideout.

“I hope I’m out of here before some fool starts banging away on that thing,” I thought to myself.

After a little while, two guitarists took the stage and started strumming light jazz tunes. I was mesmerized by their cover of a Miles Davis song and felt transported by it. When the song ended, I felt like I had gotten a fix for a deep craving I wasn’t aware that I had.

Next a lovely young woman stepped onto the floor and sang a soothing jazz version of The Eurythmics' “Sweet Dreams.” A little later a drummer showed up and I was afraid it would get noisy. But as he swept his wire brush across skins and cymbals, I felt only relief.

The talented artists were part of the Ben Burdick Trio with Ben Burdick on lead guitar, Bill Liles on bass and Scott Reusser on drums. Amy Weber lent her vocals to the mix and the result was my desire to stay and hear just one more song, then another. By the time we rolled homeward, I realized I’d gotten lost in the sound of the musicians’ deft playing. And I can’t wait to get lost again, maybe this Sunday for Mother’s Day, at Grape Escape when Burdick and Liles will be performing for local moms.

Burdick and friends are regulars on the local music circuit. Check Boise Weekly’s music guide for current listings.
