A Star Is Born ... Or Was He Manufactured?

Posted By on Tue, May 18, 2010 at 12:24 PM

If you haven't heard of young Greyson Chance, you probably haven't been on YouTube in the last week or so.
The video of this 12-year-old's performance of Lady Gaga's hit "Paparazzi" has spiked at more than 17 million views. Yes, million. (And I'm sure Perez Hilton was one of the first to spot it.)

The buzz across the web garnered the 'tween some serious national attention, including a guest spot and performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. It also generated a number of articles/posts/comments from not-exactly-conspiracy-theorists, but people who believe—and some who even have evidence—that Greyson's sudden rise to fame was planned and not Chance.

Music industry insider Bob Lefsetz posted an entry on his blog today titled "Greyson Chance a Fake?"

Hi Bob, The video has some other interesting oddities. Since I live just a few mile south of the town of Edmond which is a bedroom community of Oklahoma City and my brother and sister-in-law were and are teachers in the public school system there. Cimarron Middle School is coed. Where are the dudes? He bows to the camera and not the crowd. 14 million in 2 weeks bullshit. That's what we say in Hicksville where I'm from. He was interviewed on local TV here. He talked like his career path was set. Like it was a given he was now a viable artist. Not the golly gee wiz I really haven't had much time to think about what has happened to me yet.

I don't like being duped even if the kid is a Home Boy.

Is Greyson Chance Manufactured?

Greyson Chance signs to Interscope Records and is managed by Guy Oseary.

I don't know. YouTube's track record for being a place where stars are discovered is pretty good so far—Esmee Denters and Justin Bieber.

It happens.
