The Cute Lepers have it all. Good looks, fashion sense, the right guitars and a sexy lady on backup vocals, tambourine and hip-jiggling. All their songs were a nice mid-tempo that facilitated dancing, and they kept things pleasantly pop without being melodically corny or infecting your brain with the chorus that wouldn't die.

That said, I couldn't begin to tell you what they uniquely sound like.

The reason why is because every song, every riff, every ooh and ahh sounded like a thousand other tracks, by a thousand other bands, operating from the same 80s-ish pop-punk checklist. And don't get me wrong, it's a good sound. Pop-punk before it lost its credibility to pretty boys in So-Cal. More Dickies than Blink 182. I could listen to that stuff all day. Especially as The Cute Lepers really nailed it in every respect. Skinny ties, stovepipe pants, Les Paul Juniors, wacky sunglasses and pouty mugs flashed at the audience. Their look could have been an album cover from Stiff Records and their sound was spot-on. Even the name Cute Lepers seems just like what it should be to fit into that box. They definitely gave that rubric the Santa Claus treatment and checked it twice.

But lacking any unique flavor or direction of their own, it was in and out of my head with the very next "One, two, three, four!" I can't imagine seeking them or their records out deliberately. But it was a convenient band to have deposited in front of me without any effort on my part.
