Wrap a benefit for autistic children and an art show in bacon and what do you get? Bacon-Palooza. An event held this past week in New York City focusing on the less-than-humble pork belly.

The event featured movies, songs, dances, food and drink entirely dedicated to bacon: bacon jelly beans, bacon popcorn, bacon board games and bacon inspired Gregorian chants. The event organizer, John Ordover, explained in an NPR interview that bacon "crossed all the social lines—rich, poor, happy, sad, outgoing, introverted," he says. "If there is one thing that everyone can agree on, it's bacon." (Barring those with religious restrictions and vegetarians who don’t melt at the sight and smell of bacon, that is.)

According to the Bacon Palooza website the money raised at the event will be dedicated “to non-profit schools for autistic children in the NYC area so they can continue providing the education and therapy these kids so desperately need.”

I needed another reason to visit NYC anyway.
