Photomicrographic Beauty

How could something so hideous be so beautiful? That's our reaction to this image, part of the 2010 Small World Photomicrography Competition sponsored by Nikon.

Above is a picture of two human cancer cells sitting next to each other right before dividing into four cells.

Above are the technicolor images of soap bubbles under a microscope. The photo, by an organic farmer in Dusseldorf, Germany, were taken right before the soap film collapsed.
