Need Something to do Thursday?

People have accused American Idol of being a karaoke contest. It isn't. It's a full-on race to the bottom that happens to involve singing. The stated goal of the show has always been to find the artist with the broadest possible commercial appeal. But the problem is art that appeals to everybody is just the lowest common denominator. That's why the "losers" tend to do better than the "winners."

An actual karaoke contest is far more valid as an artistic gauntlet than American Idol. You can be fat, ugly, croaky, poorly-dressed, drunk as sin, etc. ... and still emerge victorious. All you have to do is put your back into it. Or your gut. H-a-w-t!

So tonight, why not experience an actual karaoke contest? Or better yet, try to win one.

At around 8 p.m. at Hannah's, you can toss your name in the hat to sing in the uDrove Humanitarian Rock'n Bowl karaoke contest, and potentially win sideline passes to the big game this weekend. There's going to be Poison and Garth Brooks and Prince and that song by Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock that everyone loves so much. But you can sing "The Banana Boat Song" by Harry Belafonte if you want to.

Or you can sit home and be lamer than lame. Your choice.
