Coach Chris Petersen Stays On

Posted By on Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 12:53 PM

With the 2010-2011 college football season now over after Auburn limped past Oregon in the national championship game Monday night, most teams are looking forward to a little break in the action before jumping into spring camp. This wasn't the case for Boise State with the news that rock-star head coach Chris Petersen may have an offer on the table from Stanford to take over the most successful Cardinal squad in recent memory. The Bronco faithful breathed a sigh of relief when Petersen announced Monday that he would stay with the Broncos.

If you look at the mentality and demeanor of Chris Petersen in years past, his decision to stay makes all the sense in the world. Check out this ESPN video archive from 2007, and you'll see that Petersen—before Kellen Moore, still a David among Goliaths—was building something that would take some time to get just how he wanted it.

He's happy in Boise, appears to like the athletic culture (thank you, Gene Bleymaier), and should—barring any unforseen circumstance—be in an excellent position to take Boise State football to AQ standing, be that with the Mountain West conference or otherwise. Its funny to watch how things change from year to year, but one thing remains intact with this unique coach: humility. Petersen seems impervious to the drama of the greater college football landscape, there may be a much greater lesson in this for both fans and opponents alike.
