Update on Berryhill’s New Ventures: Bacon and Plan B

Posted By on Thu, Feb 24, 2011 at 4:06 PM

Together, Plan B and Bacon sound like the shameful brunch of a Hollywood starlet. Apart, they’re the names of two new ventures Chef John Berryhill will be opening in the coming months in the same building that houses Berryhill and Co.

Plan B will open at 5 p.m. adjacent to Berryhill’s main banquet rooms, where the restaurant hosts its famous buffet brunch on Sundays. The small lounge features a number of plush, dark leather couches and chairs and a couple of big screen TVs.

“This will be a small, after dinner, after work bar,” explained Berryhill. “There won’t be happy hour. We do happy hour in the restaurant ... This is more [like] finer scotches.”

Bacon, on the other hand, will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. serving a selection of dine-in or to-go salads, sandwiches, paninis, soups and Italian strata. There will also, of course, be bacon.

“We’ll have probably eight to 10 different kinds of bacon … we’ll have turkey bacon, Berryhill bacon, kurobuta bacon, we’ll probably do some game bacon, tempeh bacon … we’ll have candied bacon, we’ll do bacon crumbles … you can put it on ice cream or if you want to put it in your latte—everything will come with bacon as an add-on.”

The spot will have an open, Big City-esque vibe, said Berryhill. A large walk-up counter with bar seating anchors one end of the room, while a variety of cafe tables and rustic chairs recycled from his former restaurant on Eighth Street will fill out the rest of the Idaho Street-facing space. Old signs from Berryhill’s former ventures, like the Shakespeare Cafe at Idaho Shakespeare Festival, will line the walls.

“My wife says that she would come here straight from the gym ... but she won't come to [Berryhill and Co.] in her gym clothes,” said Berryhill.

Berryhill projects that Plan B should be open in the next week or so, while Bacon is slated to open its doors at the end of March. Check back for further updates.
