Moving From South Park to The Book of Mormon

It's been a couple of good days for Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park.

First, the man who encouraged their murders after they penned an episode that portrayed the Muslim prophet Muhammad in a bear suit was sentenced to 25 years in prison by a federal court.

Second, their new Broadway musical The Book of Mormon—penned with Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez—has opened previews to great reviews and, surprise, no protests from the Mormon Church. The musical is—as one might expect—highly irreverent, satirical and hilariously funny in a slightly uncomfortable way, kind of like their TV show.

Book of Mormon is the story of two Mormon missionaries in Uganda and opens with a rousing song sung in the Ugandan language which, apparently, translates roughly to "Fuck You God." It seems safe to say this won't be any Sound of Music. In fact, The New York Times called the show "A Sweet Show, With Blasphemy and Cussing."

Reports say early audiences have been more amused than offended, although the same might not be said for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which posted an official response to the musical on its website.
