Need Something To Do Sunday?

Everyone loves making a mess. There is an irrepressible joy in smearing, slopping, lobbing and mussing. It's a way of breaking the tension of our rigidly ordered daily lives with a dash of gleeful chaos.

Aside from the paintings of Jackson Pollock, the closest thing Americans really have to a "mess ritual" is the cherished tradition of the food fight. And while the joy of spoon-catapulting a glob of mashed potatoes is nearly incalculable, it's also tremendously wasteful.

So today, why not reap the benefits Eastern style?

The Indian Festival of Holi is a celebration of Vishnu's greatest devotee Prahlada and his escape from the fire of the demoness Holika in Hindu mythology. To commemorate the myth, Indians storm the streets and pelt each other with brightly colored powders and gels. For that day, conflicts and personal issues are dropped and people of all mindsets come together to make a giant, beautiful mess.

Today at 2 p.m., the Boise Hare Krishna Temple will be celebrating Holi, color fight and all. Be sure to wear something you don't mind getting stained.
